Tips for the surgical repair of tears in the stifle medial collateral ligament

Medial collateral ligament repair

  • Drill a hole from just above the origin of the medial collateral ligament to the lateral femoral cortex just proximal to the trochlea. Use a C-drill guide or ‘eye ball’ the drilling angles [see cruciate repair technique for details].

  • Incise along the lateral border of the tibial crest and reflect the tibialis cranialis muscle.

  • For the tibial bone tunnel, start just distal to the insertion of the collateral ligament to emerge on the lateral tibial cortex beneath the musculature.

  • Use the loop passer to preplace a loop of strong suture material in each bone tunnel.

  • Now change your surgical gloves, open the Han-de ligature and lock the toggle onto the ligature.

  • Thread the ligature through each loop and pull the ligature into position

  • Place the second toggle on the ligature, place the toggle on the lateral tribial cortex and tie the ligature with two throws.

  • Check the range of joint motion, the joint tension and ensure the tension is equal across the joint surfaces. Do not over tighten.

  • Complete the knot with multiple throws.
